Grimes’ Retire

Mark (MPlan ‘76) and Tricia (MA ‘82) Grimes retired in July 2014. Mark retired after serving as planning and community development for the City of Golden Valley since 1984. Prior to Golden Valley, he served as the planning director in White Bear Lake, Shoreview and Waconia. Mark served as a member of the Humphrey School alumni board and as a Humphrey mentor.

Tricia was employed by the state of Minnesota for 37 years. Her career began as a legislative fiscal analyst for the Minnesota House where she served for 8 years. Since 1985, she served as policy analyst and legislative liaison for the Minnesota Office of Higher Education. Tricia served on the inaugural Humphrey School alumni board and has also been a Humphrey mentor.

Marquardt creates YPE

Kevin Marquardt (MS-STEP ‘13) decided to strengthen networking opportunities and career development for professionals in the energy industry by founding Young Professionals in Energy – Minneapolis this fall.  YPE Minneapolis offers a year-round calendar of events that aim to facilitate the advancement of young professionals in the energy industry through social, educational and civic service oriented events.

Karki joins The Global Citizens Initiative

Bibhusha Karki (MDP ‘14) is now a teaching assistant and mentor for The Global Citizens Initiative (TCGI). She will be working on the TCGI’s online global citizen leadership training course which will be conducted in 11 different countries. The course will focus on eight different modules that are designed to help deepen the students understanding of the issues within the module as well as engage students in an active learning exercise.

Goellner joins City of Golden Valley

Emily Goellner (MURP ‘14) is now the associate planner and grant writer for the City of Golden Valley. She will be working with the planning manager in the physical development department as well as performing a variety of tasks related to land use, comprehensive planning, zoning, and economic development. Emily will also be applying and administering grant funds and awards.

Freed Receives University Alumni Service Award

Gwendolyn Freed (MPA '07) was one of several individuals honored at the 2014 Alumni Awards Celebration on October 16, 2014 by the University of Minnesota Alumni Association.

Gwendolyn Freed is currently the Vice President for Institutional Advancement at Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, WA. She is formerly the executive director of Wallin Education. Prior to Wallin Education, she served as vice president for college relations at Gustavus Adolphus College from 2006 to 2011. Freed has also enjoyed a journalism career that included four and a half years as a Star Tribune reporter, several as editor-in-chief of a national arts magazine, and the opportunity to contribute freelance articles to such outlets as the Wall Street Journal, New York Newsday, and MSNBC.com.

As an alumna, she has served as a member and president of the Humphrey School’s alumni board, mentored Humphrey School students in their educational studies and career exploration. She has been and will continue to be a tremendous asset to the Humphrey School community, and her volunteer and professional contributions are wonderful models of alumni achievement.

Gwen holds a master's degree in Public Affairs from the Humphrey School of Public Affairs, a master’s degree from the Julliard School, as well as a bachelor's degree from Oberlin College. She also received her doctorate in education policy and administration at the University of Minnesota in 2012.

Each fall the University of Minnesota Alumni Association honors the top volunteers, groups, and programs of the past year.

Gwen is the eigth Humphrey School alumnus to receive the Alumni Service Award.

Aronson and Tombarge work with University Relations

Ann Aronson (MPA ‘12) and Chuck Tombarge (MPA ‘14) have joined together to co-lead the managing of day-to-day operations of University Relations at the University of Minnesota. They have been working as chiefs of staff to the president for communications as of October 13, 2014.

Ann and Chuck will be responsible for providing leadership to University Relations, advancing the institutions reputation, aligning communications strategies across campuses, as well as collaborating with units across campus and external organizations. Ann will be continuing her role as chief marketing officer and Chuck will be continuing his role as chief public relations officer.
