Brauer, long-time mentor and Alumni Service Award recipient, passes away

Donald Brauer.jpgDonald Brauer (MA '55), a man of great faith, futurist, environmentalist, community planner, Humphrey School mentor and entrepreneur, passed away February 28, 2014 after a courageous battle with Parkinson's.

Don was born November 24, 1929 in Clinton, IA to Alvin P. and Mildred R. (King) Brauer, the oldest of three children. After attending Clinton Junior college, he achieved a Civil Engineering degree from Iowa State University and a master of Public Administration from University of Minnesota. He was a Special Weapons Officer in the US Air Force and reserves. He founded Brauer and Associates and later The Brauer Group that together envisioned and defined spaces and projects including the western Minneapolis suburbs.

He was a leader receiving life accomplishments from many National professional associations and mentored for 20 years at the University of Minnesota's Humphrey School of Public Affairs. In 2007, he was awarded the Alumni Service Award for his significant impact on the University of Minnesota and the Humphrey School community.

Don was a proud 50 year Rotarian, Paul Harris Fellow, a past Edina club president, first Foundation chair as well as a key Eden Prairie club formation catalyst. Don was a member of Normandale Lutheran as well as chair or director of many Minnesota or community based foundations and charities.

He is survived by his wife, Gudrun Brauer of 58 years.

Normandale Lutheran Church, 6100 Normandale Road, Edina, visitations will be Monday, March 3 from 5-7 pm and Tuesday, March 4 at 11 am prior to a 12 noon service of life.
